There have been many famous Black and White photographers in the past, especially in the days before digital cameras. They used to have to develop first the film, then the printing of the paper. To achieve the desired results, they used to 'burn' or 'mask' areas of the print. Today there is excellent software available to professionals as well as amateurs to produce monochrome pictures. I use Google's NIK program called Silver Efex Pro 2. With this program, you can emulate the film brand and type and many other functions to achieve your individual taste.
